The basis of the method of gamma radiosurgery has been invented by Lars Leksell, a professor of neurosurgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm about 50 years ago. The first treatments has been performed in the 1960's. With the advent of CT and MRI imaging systems it became widely accepted in the 1980's. Presently there are several hundred centers around world that can perform gamma radiosurgery. There were around half a million patients last year only who underwent the procedure. In Hungary LINAC based stereotactic delivery of point doses is performed since the early 1990's in Budapest. The first center for radiosurgery in Hungary, the Debrecen Rotating Gamma Institute, has been opened in 2007 at the Medical and Health Science Center of the University of Debrecen (DEOEC).
